Rain in Gouda? 11 Surprising Outings for a Drizzly Day

Rain pounding against the windows, gray clouds, and an umbrella that’s just waiting to be blown inside out. Just when you’ve planned a day out. Don’t let a Dutch rain shower stop you! In Gouda, rainy days are the perfect time to discover the best museums, creative hotspots, cheese stories, and cozy spots. Head out, warm up with a tasty treat, and discover the best places to take shelter.

1. Take shelter from the rain among the art treasures at Museum Gouda

In the historic Catharina Gasthuis, where Museum Gouda is located, you step into a world full of art, stories, and centuries of city history. While the rain pours down outside, inside you can wander past remarkable paintings, altarpieces, and the colorful world of Gouda pottery. The interactive city model shows what Gouda looked like in 1568, and with changing exhibitions, there’s always something new to experience. Children up to age 17 get in for free, and there’s a special tablet tour for children ages 6 to 12.

2. Discover the magic of the Gouda Stained-Glass Windows in St. John’s Church

It's gray outside, but inside the St. John’s Church , the 72 famous Gouda stained-glass windows, which depict biblical and historical stories, are a burst of color. Take your time to admire the details and discover the stories behind the windows with the audio tour. The church dates back to 1278 and, at 123 meters long, is the longest church in the Netherlands. There’s also a special kids’ tour where children, with a die in hand, go on a hunt for boxes containing hidden tasks to uncover the church’s secrets.
