While the doors of the Goudse Schouwburg are temporarily closed during the summer, a lot of hard work is going on behind the scenes. In just eight weeks, the theater will get a fresh, updated look, and the building will be made more future-proof in various areas. The building will reopen its doors on Thursday, September 17. The first performance of the new season is the circus show *Swing* by Circus Ronaldo, during the Festival de Verwondering.
This year, the summer break certainly does not mean a standstill. In recent weeks, work has been in full swing in various areas of the theater. The lobbies, bars, and auditoriums are getting an update, and seats, floors, and lighting are also being replaced or refreshed. In addition, the fly system—an essential behind-the-scenes component—is undergoing its annual maintenance. Cables, motors, and safety systems are being thoroughly inspected to ensure that all technical equipment will function safely and flawlessly once again.
The renovation also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Where possible, materials are reused, and conscious choices are made. The renovation follows an exceptionally successful theater year. The Goudse Schouwburg welcomed a whopping 22.5 percent more visitors than in the previous season.
The new theater season begins on Thursday, September 17, with “Swing” by Circus Ronaldo. The young generation of circus artists from the Flemish troupe presents a show that combines authentic circus, 1940s swing music, and a generous dose of playfulness.
The theater’s opening coincides with Festival de Verwondering, which will transform Gouda’s city center into one big cultural festival from September 17 through 19. Visitors can enjoy music, dance, visual arts, street theater, and theater, as well as unique installations, café sessions, stalls, and the spectacular closing show.
