During vacations and trips, we don’t just enjoy our surroundings—we also capture moments along the way. We then take the photos and memories we’ve gathered home with us, and some people turn them into a book, while others create a presentation on the computer or a photo album on their phone. Artist Marry Buiks did something else entirely: he created a work of art.
He drew inspiration and came up with the idea for this after visiting Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japan. In August 1945, these cities were struck by atomic bombs. The explosions destroyed most of the cities, and the intense heat and shock wave killed a huge number of people instantly.
When he returned home, he continued to develop his idea, and that has now resulted in a work of art that symbolizes “The Power of Connection.”
The basis of this artwork is a weathered mirror featuring the outlines of two people made of special glass. This gives the impression that it has been exposed to intense heat. The missing bodies are connected only by their hands.
This impressive work of art is now on display at Unit4Art, Crabethpark 24 in Gouda. Open Friday through Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment.
