The exhibition "Human 2026" by artist Alrik Stelling will be on view from October 29 through November 15 at De Firma Kunstcentrum Gouda.

In his ever-expanding “Human” series, Alrik Stelling has only one starting point: people. This series began as a reaction to the “Elsewhere” series, in which he deliberately omitted people because he wanted the viewer to be the human figure in his meter-sized paintings. The paintings in the “Human” series are much smaller, all square, and vary in size and tonal range. They typically show only a part of the person or people depicted.

Alrik on his creative process: “I draw images from the media, photographs, observation, and memory. I take a detail from such an image and then further manipulate it as I paint. The title completes the work. I often address serious subjects, without limiting myself to any one specific theme. Beyond that, I wisely remain silent and am happy to leave the interpretation of my work up to the viewer.”

“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.” (Mark Twain).

Alrik Stellinggraduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He has a painting studio in Alphen aan den Rijn and is active on the exhibition committee of Pulchri Studio. In 2024, he was nominated for the Jacob Hartog Prize for his work *Breathtaking*.
