A Thursday morning in Gouda, sometime between April and September. Soon you hear the haggling of the cheese traders and farmers.

And there they are: the famous Gouda cheese girls, surrounded by spectators. Horse-drawn cheese carts come and go. Just before the Gouda Waag, they come to a halt. Cheese boys jump out and start unloading the cheeses, tossing them over their shoulders, which are then weighed on the original scales in the Gouda Waag.

You can enjoy the world-famous cheese there, as well as stalls filled with local products. In addition to cheese shops and cheese-making, you’ll also find a craft market. There’s plenty to do in Gouda in the afternoon as well. For example, you can take a canal cruise or join a walking tour with the Gouda Guides Guild. At Bergs Bakery, you can participate in a syrup waffle baking workshop. Or visit the model of Goudafrom the year 1562 at or take a photo in traditional Gouda attire on Lange Tiendeweg.

The Gouda Cheese Market is a spectacular historical and nostalgic scene. If you want to visit the cheese market, make sure you arrive at the Market Square on time.
