Who doesn’t know the stroopwafel? The stroopwafel was invented for the poor, who couldn’t afford more expensive cookies. The oldest recipe found in Gouda dates back to the early 19th century. In Gouda, you can sample stroopwafels in all shapes and sizes—from the crispy Kamphuisen stroopwafels to Markus’s “superwafels,” and from the well-known Punselie’s stroopkoekje (unfortunately, the factory has since closed) to the Van Vliet stroopwafel from Berg’s Bakery.
