Cinema Gouda explores stories from Jakarta to the Moluccas through films and discussions
On Saturday, June 13, Cinema Gouda will be dedicated to stories about identity, family history, and cultural heritage. With screenings of the documentaries *Mama'ku* and *Batik, Beats & Bumbu*, as well as a special Q&A with the filmmakers, Cinema Gouda takes visitors on a journey from Jakarta to the Moluccas and from the colonial past to a new generation’s search for its roots.
The afternoon begins with *Mama'ku*, the new documentary by filmmaker Sven Peetoom. In the film, he follows dancer and choreographer Cheroney Pelupessy as she travels to Indonesia for the first time with her mother. From Jakarta to Saparua in the Moluccas, mother and daughter explore a long-hidden family history in which migration, domestic violence, and intergenerational trauma play a significant role.
Next up is *Batik, Beats & Bumbu*, a documentary by director Claire Pijman. The film follows a new generation of creators who are reinterpreting the shared cultural heritage between the Netherlands and Indonesia in a contemporary way. From the Guave fashion studio, where traditional batik is given a modern twist, to musicians, photographers, and culinary artists who are infusing new meaning into their cultural heritage.
This double feature provides an opportunity for connection, recognition, and deeper reflection. Both films explore how younger generations grapple with a history that has often been left unspoken for a long time, and how art, music, fashion, and personal stories can contribute to a better understanding of identity and heritage.
The program runs from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and takes place at Cinema Gouda. Tickets are available on the Cinema Gouda website.
