"Ambachtelijk Plateel" is Trudy Otterspeer’s studio. Founded in 2007, it has been located in the historic city center of Gouda, the Netherlands, since December 2012. Here, she is bringing renewed attention to a centuries-old craft: pottery painting. In this process, unglazed earthenware is decorated by hand with a design or motif, glazed, and then fired a second time. Well-known decorative styles include Delft Blue and Gouda pottery. Trudy Otterspeer received her professional training at the Zenith Pottery in Gouda. At her recommendation, “Pottery Painting in Gouda” was added to the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands in 2014.
Every hand-painted piece is unique. It could be a commemorative plate, an anniversary bowl, a decorative platter, or even tiles for the restoration of a tile mural. In addition to these one-of-a-kind pieces, small series are also produced: souvenirs and seasonal items, such as Christmas decorations. All are hand-painted, making them truly distinctive. They also make excellent corporate gifts.
In her own studio, she offers classes at every level. To learn the basics, there is the Basic Course, and an open studio for refining and refreshing your technique. For advanced students, there are themed courses such as “Writing with a Brush” and “Landscape Painting.”
- "OPEN ATELIER" is an advanced course, so it is intended for experienced pottery painters.
