World Food & Film Festival at GOUDasfalt Celebrates Film, Food, and 75 Years of the Moluccan Community in the Netherlands

On Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6, GOUDasfalt will be transformed into an atmospheric outdoor movie theater during the World Food & Film Festival. The Goudse Schouwburg and Cinema Gouda will present two special documentaries under the stars. Admission is free. 
On Saturday, September 5, at 8:30 p.m., *Signalen van Boven* is on the program. This Dutch documentary premiered in January 2026 and ties in with the national commemorative year marking 75 years of Moluccans in the Netherlands. *Signalen van Boven* brings together Moluccan cultural heritage and different generations. Food plays a key role in conveying memories and identity. One of the main characters is chef Chesron Nanuru of the Senang Maka restaurant. The documentary shows how stories, flavors, and traditions are passed down from generation to generation through food.
On Sunday, September 6, at 8:30 p.m., “De Vegan Veehouder” by photographer and documentary filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen will be screened. The film follows Limburg-based poultry farmer Ruud Zanders, who, after the bankruptcy of his large-scale poultry operations, started a smaller-scale and more sustainable business. His “Kipster” concept is now gaining worldwide attention. At the same time, Zanders is increasingly questioning why people raise animals for food. For his own consumption, he avoids meat, dairy, and eggs as much as possible. The documentary thus explores a pressing question: Do we need animals in the global food system? With its free outdoor cinema, the World Food & Film Festival brings film, food, and community together at one special location. During the festival, GOUDasfalt serves as the backdrop for two evenings centered on documentaries, stories, and the theme of food.
