Just checking the news, looking up a recipe, or checking your notifications? Before you know it, you’ve been staring at your screen for an hour. That’s not surprising: many apps and social media platforms are designed to hold your attention for as long as possible. So it’s not entirely your fault. But it is your time.
There are better ways to spend that time. Screens can be a lot of fun, too. You learn new things, connect with others, and relax—but only if you let your screen work for you. Finding a healthy balance can make all the difference for you. Are you also waiting for guidelines from the government or your school? Or for big tech companies to adjust their algorithms? There’s actually a lot you can do on your own right now.
Children ages 10 and up can visit HoeZoMediawijs.nl, the youth website for fun, safe, and smart use of (social) media. For network partners and other professionals in the field of media literacy, there is the online platform NetwerkMediawijsheid.nl.
