National Outdoor Reading Day 2026
The June Silent Reading Party in Gouda will take place during National Outdoor Reading Day on June 28 at GOUDasfalt, Gouderaksedijk 32. Everyone is welcome, young and old alike. Admission to this event is free.
What is Outdoor Reading Day?
An annual celebration where all readers go outside to read. Not just in the garden or on the balcony, but especially in public spaces. In the park, on a patio, on a bus, tram, or train. The idea is to be seen with a book, because: Seeing people read encourages others to read! By showing how wonderful it is to lose yourself in a book, we inspire others to do the same. The best part is: anyone can join in. All you need is a good book and a place outdoors.
So where exactly is that outside?
In the garden of the Dijkhuis at GOUDasfalt. It’s the first house on the right as you enter the GOUDasfalt grounds. The garden of that house has cozy picnic benches where you can sit back and enjoy a good read. Want to sit comfortably? Bring a cushion. Prefer to lie on the grass? Bring a blanket.
We’ll start reading at 1:00 p.m. (don’t forget to bring your book!).
At 2:00 p.m., the Dijkhuis opens to the public, and you’ll have the opportunity to sample various types of tea. We’ll wrap up the Silent Reading Party at 2:30 p.m., but you’re welcome to stay seated or lying down to keep reading, of course.
What do you mean, a Silent Reading Party?
On April 7, the Jansdebat took place with Roxane van Iperen and Rik Peels. Among other things, the discussion touched on how we’ve gradually lost the ability to read really well. And how important it is for your brain, development, ability to put things into perspective, and empathy (for everything, really ;-) to read in silence for long stretches at a time and to be able to lose yourself in a book and a story. That’s why the Gouda Library organizes a Silent Reading Party once a month, where you can really make good progress on your book.
