Erasmus left behind a vast and diverse body of work. He wrote a translation of the New Testament, collected and interpreted proverbs, and wrote books on etiquette and education. Erasmus published works in many different genres. Yet there is a common thread running through them all: biblical humanism. In all his writings, Erasmus returned to the original, classical sources and took as his starting point the idea that human beings can be shaped and improved.

In this lecture, Sanne Steen explores one of Erasmus’s most widely read books today: *In Praise of Folly*. What role does this work play in Erasmus’s broader body of work? And what can this book tell us about the modern appropriation of Erasmus?

Sanne Steen is a Ph.D. candidate at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her research focuses on how we engage with the past, specifically with historical figures. Erasmus and how he has been appropriated in Rotterdam are central to this research.
