Joris & The Secret of the Gouwekerk

What if the walls of De Gouwekerk could speak? This iconic church in downtown Gouda takes center stage in a new and spectacular theater production in which De Gouwekerk serves not only as the impressive backdrop but also as the central theme of the story. The play *Joris & the Secret of De Gouwekerk* is a production created entirely in Gouda and promises to become one of the most extraordinary cultural events the city has seen in years.         

The play tells the fictional story of Joris, a descendant of the church’s original architect, who returns to Gouda when mysterious events take hold of the Gouwekerk. Power outages, falling stones, and strange noises lead him to a hidden history full of secrets, codes, and forgotten spaces. 

What makes this production special is its close connection to the true history of the Gouwekerk. Visitors are taken on a journey through various periods in the church’s past, including its construction in 1903, its role during World War II, the turbulent 1970s, and the period when the church was owned by Johan Maasbach.

But the show is more than just a historical adventure. Through the performance, the creators also aim to convey a timely message about connection in an era of polarization and division. The role that De Gouwekerk has played in the city for centuries also teaches us something for the present day.

"Joris and the Secret of the Gouwekerk" is an impressive production resulting from a unique collaboration between John de Heij Theater Productions and the Gouwekerk. More than 30 actors and singers tell a unique story, accompanied by a live band featuring amazing musicians. The production makes use of the church’s unique features, creating a dynamic environment around the audience with light, darkness, sound, projections, film footage, and special effects.
