This walking tour is part of the “Wonder Walls” exhibition at Museum Gouda. Click here for more information about the exhibition. Before or after visiting this exhibition, you can join a walking tour once a week (alternating between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) that takes you to locations that played an important role in the lives of the Flemish tapestry weavers in Gouda. By combining a museum visit with the walking tour, you’ll gain a good impression of the living, working, and social environments of the artisans as well as their products.
Guides from the Gouda Guides Guild will take you on a tour of the places where the carpet weavers lived and worked. There are still a few buildings that we know were once home to active carpet weavers.
You’ll walk through streets whose names still reflect the presence of this occupational group. You’ll pass a fulling mill and sites where tanneries once stood. Of course, we’ll also discuss the role of the city government. Along the way, the guides will tell you about the place of these migrants in Gouda society: Were they able to advance socially in the city, or were attempts made to limit their influence?
