Introductory Literary Walk
This afternoon, a walking tour of the city, visiting sites associated with writers, printers, and libraries.
Gouda was a prosperous city from early on, with many visitors and a tolerant city council. As a result of the so-called “Modern Devotion” movement in the mid-14th century, 11 monasteries were established in Gouda, some of which possessed extremely valuable books. The clergy also wrote and copied books themselves.
Gouda experienced three periods during which well-known printers were very active in the city: the late 15th century, the 17th century, and the 19th century.
Gouda was home to many famous printers and writers, whom we will meet on our tour of the city. As a preview, here is an ode to Gouda, a poem by Leo Vroman, written by him: Ode to Gouda
