Beginner's Walk: Heretics and Nonconformists
The name of this walking tour sounds a bit intense. Why not just stroll past historic facades while listening to the expert commentary of a GGG city guide? You’ll certainly do just that during this tour through the beautiful historic center of Gouda. But this will be a city walk focusing on the eccentric and sometimes rebellious individuals who lived in Gouda and the role they played in the history of the city and the country.
Today you’ll meet fake rebels, devout nuns, and informers. You’ll also encounter liberals and puritans, rebellious ministers and printers, brilliant minds, and headstrong patriots. Of course, we won’t skip the two most famous mavericks, Erasmus and Coornhert. In one way or another, they all left their mark on the city’s daily life and sometimes even the entire country. And what is the role of the kingfisher?
In short, this is an exciting walking tour of the city where you’ll discover who lived behind Gouda’s facades and what beliefs were prevalent at the time. Be amazed by the guide’s stories about all those illustrious citizens of the city.
