After the Reformation, everyone was expected to become Protestant. The Catholic faith could not be practiced publicly. But what was the situation for Catholics in the Reformed Republic? For example, are there still any former clandestine churches in Gouda? On this walk, we’ll pass by places where Catholics kept their faith alive in the 17th and 18th centuries despite persecution. This culture of remembrance is reflected in places, stories, and (images of) objects and paintings intended to give Catholic believers courage. We’ll also visit the Old Catholic Church of Gouda.
