Breakfast Lecture at Museum Gouda
Includes a visit to the “Susanna” exhibition On January 17, 2025, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., Museum Gouda will host a lecture on the life and work of artist Artemisia Gentileschi. Art historian and curator Janita Baron will explore her unconventional life, artistic signature, and sources of inspiration while you enjoy a delicious breakfast.
Gentileschi built an impressive career, spanning from Florence to London. She was one of the most important artists of the Italian 17th-century Baroque period and the creator of the centerpiece of the exhibition “Susanna—From the Middle Ages to MeToo.” As a woman, Gentileschi managed to make her mark in a man’s world without conforming to traditional expectations. Her work was influenced by the Caravaggio style: high drama, realistic depictions, and strong light-dark contrasts, with women often playing the leading roles.
She depicted the story of Susanna and the Elders at least six times. It is virtually impossible to separate this fact from the painful reality that Gentileschi was raped by her teacher at the age of 17. Did this horrific experience influence her work, and in particular her depictions of Susanna? How does Gentileschi relate to her female peers and contemporaries? And who was she? These are just a few of the questions that will be addressed during the lecture.
The cost of the breakfast lecture is €19.95, which includes breakfast and admission to the exhibition. Museum members receive a €5 discount.
