Molen ’t Slot, located at Punt 17 in Gouda, will be getting brand-new sails on Tuesday, February 18, 2025! This is a unique occasion, as sails typically last about 50 years. Replacing them therefore only happens once every few decades. A perfect opportunity to witness up close how this major project is carried out! Work begins at 7:30 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Admission is free.

What exactly is happening?

The experts from De Gelder will remove the old sails from the mill and install the new ones. The sails form the basis of the sail cross and are essential to the mill’s operation. Once they’re installed, Molen ’t Slot will finally be able to turn again!

Earlier this year, on January 13 and 14, the De Roode Leeuw windmill also received new sails. The old sails were removed using aerial work platforms, and the new sails were transported into Gouda by water. The De Roode Leeuw is now back in full operation, and the ’t Slot windmill will follow soon!

Why is this so special?

The ’t Slot Windmill has a long and rich history. In 1581, a post mill was built on this site on the foundations of the castle of the Lords of Ter Gouw, which had been demolished shortly before. The current mill, the third to stand on this site, was rebuilt after a fire in 1831. Since 1962, the mill has been owned by the municipality of Gouda and is managed by the Association of Gouda Millers, which keeps the mill running and gives guided tours to visitors.

The windmill has been out of service since October 2023 due to major maintenance, including the replacement of the platform. It later turned out that both sails no longer met current safety requirements. The replacement on February 18 is therefore a significant milestone: after months of inactivity, the windmill is finally up and running again!

Come on by and see it for yourself!

Replacing the rods is a major undertaking and a rare occurrence.
