When the city center of Gouda is lit up by thousands of candles on Friday, December 12, during Gouda by Candlelight, Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij will present music and light art at various locations throughout the city.
Starting in the late afternoon, various music groups from De Kunstmachine will perform at distinctive locations. In addition to music in the city center , this year the Cultuurhuis is presenting the light art project 'LICHTLICHAAM' on Erasmusplein .
Music groups in the city center
De Kunstmachine’s Vrijetijdsorkest will play folk music and Christmas carols in the Joostkapel. On Weeshuispleintje, the two choirs Voce Cantate and Streetlife will perform a varied mix of Christmas and pop music. The Clarinet Ensemble Chalumeau will play in the Oude Synagoge. The evening concludes musically with a performance by the Baroque Ensemble in the Old Catholic Church.

Vrijetijdsorkest | 4:00 – 4:45 p.m. | Joostkapel
This always cheerful orchestra, conducted by Maaike Gerlsma, plays folk music, light classical, and Christmas music. Especially for Gouda by Candlelight, the orchestra will be joined by singers performing well-known Christmas and pop songs.
Voce Cantate and Pop Choir Streetlife | 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. | Weeshuispleintje
Two Kunstmachine choirs in concert. Under the direction of Paul-Chris van Strien, they will perform the best of their (Christmas) repertoire.
Clarinet Ensemble Chalumeau | 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. | Old Synagogue
The 12 clarinetists, conducted by Dominique Zwartelé, present a festive program featuring works by the composers Palestrina, Mozart, Bach, and Handel.
Baroque Ensemble | 7:15 – 8:00 p.m. | Old Catholic Church
Under the direction of Hans Wolff, you will hear the recorder, flute, violin, and harpsichord. Let yourself be carried away by the beautiful music of Telemann, Handel, and Vivaldi.
LICHTLICHAAM on Erasmusplein
The light art installation LICHTLICHAAM can be viewed between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. right next to Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij. The artwork was developed with, by, and for young people and focuses on the often invisible struggles of young people with mental health issues. The artwork depicts how young people view themselves and their bodies, how they cope with eating disorders, and invites conversation in an accessible way. Under the guidance of Jeugdtheaterhuis, young people from all over Gouda will present several short performances on this theme that evening at the artwork. At 6:00 PM, the kick-off of LICHTLICHAAM will take place, and everyone is warmly welcome.
