Open House at the Garenspinnerij Cultural Center and the "Illustrating Stories" Exhibition
The new course season at Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij is just around the corner. Once again this year, it kicks off with an OPEN HOUSE. On Saturday, September 5, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., everyone is welcome to come take a look inside the historic building on Turfsingel. Following the Open House, the exhibition “Verhalen Verbeelden” will open at 5:15 p.m.
Now that you’re back from vacation, this is the perfect time to decide what you’ll do as the days start to get shorter again. So be sure to visit the Open House at Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij, because together, the Cultuurhuis partners—Jeugdtheaterhuis, StudioGonz, and De Kunstmachine—are once again offering a program for young and old, beginners and advanced participants this coming season. Whatever your talents or interests may be: here you’ll find plenty to do in the fields of visual arts, music, and theater.
Meet the team… and join in
During the Open House, visitors can meet the instructors, take a look inside the theater studios of Jeugdtheaterhuis, or explore the music rooms and art studios of De Kunstmachine.
Take part in short visual arts workshops, try your first music lesson, and test out various musical instruments.
Take a trial musical or theater class at Jeugdtheaterhuis or hit the karaoke stage at the café/venue/club StudioGonz.
Stop by to see performances by our choirs and check out the photo exhibitions on the premises.
Several local amateur arts organizations will also be showcasing their work.
And for those who decide quickly, there are special discounts on music lessons and short visual arts workshops, valid only during the Open House on September 5.
So come by, join in, and soak up the atmosphere!
Exhibition 'Stories Connect'
At 5:15 p.m., Gouda City Councilmember Sjane-Marie Koppers will open the exhibition“VERHALEN VERBEELDEN” at Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij. Everyone is welcome; doors open at 4:45 p.m., following the Open House. The exhibition runs through September 30.
For this project, Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij—De Kunstmachine, together with photographer and instructor Bram Tackenberg, collected fifteen personal stories from residents of Korte Akkeren. These are stories about how they experience, use, and pass on their neighborhood. Artists and students from De Kunstmachine then turned these stories into twenty works of art. The artworks do not depict the story literally, but reflect the artist’s own interpretation. Take Isabella, for example, who is building her life in Korte Akkeren step by step: “The other day I needed a saw. I got to talking with my German neighbor, who was also doing some home improvement. He let me borrow his saw. That was so kind.” Further down in the neighborhood, Hamza, who came from Syria with his parents, talks about the cars that drive past his house and what he wants to be when he grows up. Each artist chose their own perspective, and the resulting artworks showcase what makes Korte Akkeren so special. Not only that, but photos of the artworks hang on the walls along Herenstraat. They’ll remain there for years to come. In this way, the neighborhood itself becomes a public exhibition, and the creativity and imagination of its residents remain visible to everyone who walks by. The original artworks are currently on temporary display at Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij, supplemented by photos of the creative process and images of the works as they are displayed in the neighborhood. This gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the project.
